• Egg Salad with Avocado helps vata dosha

    What’s Your Dosha?

Whether we think about it or not, nutrition is a huge part of our lives in many ways. What we eat can affect our sleep, energy, skin, weight, hair, nails, bone strength, muscle strength, etc. Diving a little deeper into the affects of food, it can also take a huge part on mental stability. Getting to know your body will help you learn what to eat and when to eat it to keep yourself balanced. We will discuss how to combine nutritional focus and yoga together to keep the mind and body balanced by incorporating Ayurveda into our practice.

  • A Pregnant Yogi

I could let myself fall into the rut… I have gained 16 lbs. I seriously cannot remember a thing I don’t write down and it makes me feel incompetent. I drive by and miss my turns. I’m late. I’m uncomfortable. I can’t make my body do what it did. I’m emotional; I cry everyday- sometimes when I’m moved by happiness, and sometimes when I’m overwhelmed with sadness. Yesterday, I was talking to my friend that said, “If I get up in the morning and tell myself I am tired. Then, I’m tired. If I tell myself, I’m good, well then I’m good.”  I realized that for the most part, I…

  • Why Do I Practice Yoga

guess I would have to go back to what was like life before yoga. Tired all the time. Busting out of my clothes and heading for the next size. My back hurt, my knees hurt. I couldn't touch my toes. My mind raced. I was filled with anxiety. I worried all the time. I thought I could control just about everything in my world and yet I was pretty sure that all my woes were someone else's fault. I was waiting for something to happen so I could be happier.

  • The Cost of Knowing Best

The cost of thinking you are right or you know best is probably more than you have thought about. The single biggest problem, I believe, with thinking that you are always right is that you stop listening.  I bet that if you are one of those type of thinkers, even right now your mind is piping up loud and clear, “nope, I always listen – I’m just always right.”    Then, your work if you are the person that believes they are always right, the one that is always interrupting, the first person to shout out their sage advice is to be quiet.  It’s going to be super hard at…

  • Getting More From Your Yoga Practice

Sometimes the best answer is rolling out your mat. I started my Yoga practice about 7 years ago, and I have practiced on and off since then. To be honest, when I first began practicing, I did it mostly for the physical aspect and did not have an instant love affair with my initial class.  I actually was not into Yoga that much at all.  It wasn’t until I was living in NYC and found a solid class with a teacher who I loved that I started to consistently show up, regardless of how my day unfolded or how tired I was, and I began to truly reap the benefits.…

  • What’s your story?

What’s your story? You know, the one you keep carrying around with you that informs all your decisions. The one that may be holding you back. The story that says, “I’m not good enough”. The story that says “I’m too old”. “No one ever likes me.” “I’ll never find the right relationship”. The story that “it’s not my fault”. How are those stories working for you?   In Budokon, we talk a lot about our stories.  We are not all physical practice – we are a life science; a living art-form.  We are committed to doing the really hard work of looking at our stuff.  More so, we are committed…

  • Student Spotlight: Christine Holihan-Boothe

Last week, something weird happened to me in yoga. I was not sure then and I am still not sure now where it came from. Maybe it was the two week break I took to nurse the tendinitis that flared up in my shoulder, maybe it was because it was cheat day and I had spent the day loading up on all of my favorite fatty foods, or perhaps it was the fact that I am a bit fluffy today ( a consequence of cheat day) Whatever the reason, today I allowed my body to break my focus. I did not like what I saw in the mirror today and…

  • The Human Experience by Dave DiSanto

Sharing In The Human Experience   Why is it the things that we’re all so vulnerable to talk about are the very same things that make us all so Human? What are we all so afraid of?   Perhaps it’s the love, I’m sure it’s the tears. Why are we so hesitant to show one another the bottoms of our feet?   Do we think people will only see the dirt and not the soul?   At night, do we see only stars and not the Glorious, mysteriously Grand universe all around them as well?   Would it be nearly as beautiful if there were only stars… or only darkness?   If we meet someone…

  • BPY Mala Making Workshop

Join Shannon Harty, 500 ERYT  to learn the art of mala making or connect with others while practicing your existing mala making skills. Mala making is a very meditative and grounding exercise that allows us to create something beautiful with our hands while finding more ease, balance and peace in our minds and hearts. Shannon will share the sacred practice of beading, knotting, mantra and symbolism that was imparted to her by her mentor and friend, Casey Abley of ‘These Seeds of Love’. Malas have been used in many spiritual and religious traditions as a tool to aid in prayer and/or meditation. Malas, also know as ‘garlands’, consist of 108 beads…
