More Than a Yoga Class: What Makes Balanced Planet Yoga Different
There are many places where you can take a yoga class. You can follow a video at home. Join a gym. Download an app. Walk into a studio, take your place in the back corner and leave without speaking to anyone. Those options can all be useful. But Balanced Planet Yoga was created to offer something more than an hour of exercise.
Our purpose is contained in three simple words:
Breathe. Move. Belong.
A Yoga Studio Built Around Real People
Balanced Planet Yoga opened in Marlton, New Jersey, in 2015 with a simple mission: to love and serve the people who walk through our doors. Over the years, teachers, owners, and class offerings have evolved. The heart of the studio has remained the same. We believe yoga should make room for your humanity. You do not need to be:
- Flexible
- Calm
- Thin
- Experienced
- Fashionable
- Certain of what you believe
- Having a particularly good day
You can arrive tired, curious, strong, distracted, grieving, hopeful, stiff, overwhelmed or ready to move. There is room for all of it.
We Teach Yoga, Not Just Poses
Physical movement is a meaningful part of yoga. It can help us build strength, mobility, balance, coordination and body awareness. Research summarized by Johns Hopkins Medicine identifies potential benefits that include greater strength, balance and flexibility, along with support for relaxation and general well-being.
But yoga was never intended to end with a well-executed pose.
At BPY, students may also encounter:
- Breathwork
- Meditation
- Mantra
- Yoga philosophy
- Sound
- Deep rest
- Self-inquiry
- Community
- Practical tools for meeting life more consciously
Not every class includes all of those elements. Together, however, our offerings reflect a broader understanding of what yoga can be.
We Offer Different Doors Into the Practice
People come to yoga for different reasons. One person may want a strong vinyasa practice. Another may need yin, restorative yoga or meditation. Someone else may want the energy of a heated class, the physical challenge of yoga sculpt or an experience that combines movement with sound.
Our current offerings may include:
- Hot and infrared yoga
- Vinyasa
- BPY Flow
- Beginner yoga
- Yin
- Restorative practices
- Yoga sculpt and barre-inspired movement
- Meditation and breathwork
- Sound healing
- Reiki
- Workshops, retreats and teacher training
You can review our full yoga class descriptions to find the practice that fits your needs.
When you are completely new, begin with our Beginner’s Guide to Yoga and our guide to what happens during your first yoga class.
Beginners Are Part of the Community
Some studios say beginners are welcome but structure every class around people who already understand the language, poses, and transitions. We believe beginners deserve to be taught. Our beginner classes slow the practice down so students can learn:
- Foundational poses
- Basic transitions
- Alignment principles
- How to use props
- Breathing practices
- When and how to modify
- How to distinguish useful effort from pain
You will not understand everything after one class. You are not supposed to. Yoga is a practice precisely because there is always more to discover.
Our Teachers Are Allowed to Be Human, Too
We value training, preparation, and professionalism. We also value individuality. Our teachers are not expected to become interchangeable versions of one another. Each person brings lived experience, humor, perspective, study and heart into the room. That means you may connect deeply with one teacher’s pace, language or style and prefer another teacher for a completely different reason. We encourage students to explore. Finding the right teacher is part of finding the right practice.
Community Is Not a Marketing Word Here
Belonging is not created by declaring that a community exists. It develops through ordinary moments repeated over time:
- Someone learns your name.
- A teacher notices you are struggling.
- Another student makes room for your mat.
- People celebrate your progress.
- You are missed when you have been away.
- The studio shows up when the community needs support.
Balanced Planet Yoga is a mother-daughter-owned studio, but the BPY story is larger than any two people. It belongs to the teachers who prepare each class, the students who keep returning, the people who attend trainings and retreats, and the community members who have carried the studio through more than a decade of change.
We Believe Yoga Should Follow You Home
A yoga practice is valuable when it changes more than your hamstrings. The real measure may be whether you can:
- Take one breath before reacting
- Recognize when you need rest
- Stay present during discomfort
- Treat your body with greater respect
- Notice the stories driving your choices
- Make room for another person’s experience
- Recover your footing after life knocks you off balance
Those moments may never appear in a yoga photograph. They are still the practice.
Is Balanced Planet Yoga the Right Studio for You?
We hope so, but we also believe people should choose thoughtfully. Read our guide on how to choose the right yoga studio. Explore the schedule. Try different teachers and classes. Ask questions.
Pay attention to how you feel—not only during the poses, but when you enter the room. Balanced Planet Yoga may be right for you when you are looking for:
- A welcoming yoga studio in Marlton, NJ
- Beginner-friendly instruction
- Both movement and quieter practices
- Experienced teachers with distinct voices
- A community that values people over performance
- Yoga that can support life beyond the studio
