Barre vs. Yoga Sculpt vs. Pilates: What’s the Difference? (And Why They’re All Trying to Steal Your Favorite Leg Muscles)

    July 1, 2026 /

One of the questions we get all the time at the studio is: “What’s the difference between barre, yoga sculpt, and Pilates?” It’s a fair question. From the outside, they all involve small movements, strange-looking equipment, people shaking at unexpected times, and an instructor who keeps smiling while everyone else is questioning their life choices. So…are they basically the same? Yes.And absolutely not. What Barre, Yoga Sculpt, and Pilates All Have in Common At their core, all three practices are interested in one thing: helping you move better. Not just harder. Better. They all ask you to become aware of your body instead of simply surviving the workout. They build…

Becoming the Helper You Needed There is a particular kind of exhaustion that seems to define our time — not just physical fatigue, but a deeper weariness that comes from trying to hold ourselves together while the world keeps shifting beneath us. It’s the fatigue of endless responsibility, constant information, and the quiet ache of disconnection. Many people find their way to yoga through this exhaustion. They unroll a mat hoping for rest, but what they often discover is something far more profound: a way back to themselves. When we talk about yoga teacher training at Balanced Planet Yoga, we’re not talking about learning to perform advanced postures or memorize…

    November 5, 2024 /

by Tracy Zuber-Kerr Have you ever found yourself feeling stuck—trapped in the monotony of daily life, unsure of which direction to take or how to spark change? It’s easy to become overwhelmed by the noise in our minds, drowning out that quiet yet powerful inner voice that holds the key to our growth and transformation.  Sometimes, all we need is a fresh perspective or a new approach to shake off that feeling of stagnation. Enter the idea of a new fitness class: it’s not just about moving your body; it’s about awakening that inner voice and reconnecting with your true self. June 7, 2024 /

Reflecting on Loving Kindness Meditation Over the past eight weeks, we’ve embarked on a beautiful journey together, exploring the practice of Loving Kindness (Metta) meditation. This practice has guided us to cultivate a deeper sense of compassion, empathy, and unconditional love, not only for ourselves but also for others. It’s been heartwarming to witness the transformation and growth within our community as we collectively open our hearts. Let’s review Metta before we head into our next technique – Vipassana meditation. Benefits of Loving Kindness Meditation The benefits of Loving Kindness meditation are profound and far-reaching. The Inner Journey of Meditation – A Meditation Retreat

    November 14, 2023 /

by Jeff Carreira Join us for BPY’s First in-studio Retreat, December 16th + December 17th Somewhere between 2000 and 2500 years ago, 195 [or 196, depending on the version you are reading] short phrases (sutras) were gathered together into a book by the great Indian sage known as Patanjali. The book is called The Yoga Sutras and describes the philosophy and practices of what is commonly known as yoga today. As I said, the yoga sutras are short phrases, not even complete sentences. They were written in this form to contain as much wisdom as possible in the smallest number of words. This was typical in oral traditions, where information…

Yoga Nidra & The Mandukya Upanishad

    May 20, 2023 /

The Mandukya Upanishad is one of the shortest but most profound texts in the Upanishads, the ancient scriptures of Hinduism. It is considered to be one of the primary texts on the philosophy of Advaita Vedanta, which is focused on non-dualism and the ultimate reality of the universe. The Upanishad consists of only 12 mantras, but these mantras provide deep insights into the nature of reality and consciousness. The Mandukya Upanishad stands out for its unique focus on the nature of consciousness and the exploration of the self. Interestingly, there exists a powerful and transformative practice known as Yoga Nidra, which draws inspiration from the principles elucidated in the Mandukya…

What the heck is Circular Fashion?

    October 3, 2022 /

And what do clothing swaps have to do with it? To understand circular fashion, you must first understand the term “fast fashion”. Fast fashion refers to a sector of fashion whose business model relies on the rapid design, production, distribution of clothing. This allows retailers to produce large quantities of a wide variety of clothing at a low price to consumers. For the individual customer, this makes snatching up the latest trends easier and more affordable, rather than splurging on the more expensive item. However, therein lies the problem. Consumers are purchasing more clothing than ever due to its poor quality. This cycle of buying and discarding has created a huge…

This gives students three months of unlimited classes to BPY’s regularly scheduled offerings. Not all stress is bad. Eustress (good stress) can boost motivation and decision-making, which are important to achieving education and career goals. But chronic stress that results in longstanding high levels of cortisol circulating in our systems can suppress the immune system and impair brain function. In fact, science has show that chronic stress can actually rewire the brain and disrupt normal development. Yoga and mindfulness have been shown to improve both…
