Yin Is More Than Stretching: Learning the Art of the Long Hold
Our 30-Hour Yin Yoga Teacher Training returns to Balanced Planet Yoga October 2–4, 2026 — and this one goes well beyond learning a collection of poses.
From the outside, Yin Yoga can look deceptively simple.
You come to the floor. You find a shape. You stay there.
But anyone who has spent a few quiet minutes in Dragon, Caterpillar or Sphinx knows that “doing less” does not necessarily mean there is less happening.
In fact, that is part of what makes Yin such an interesting practice to study and such a nuanced practice to teach.
“In the stillness of the long hold, the real practice begins.”
Yin asks a different question
Much of modern yoga asks us to move, stabilize, strengthen, transition and organize the body in space.
Yin asks something different.
What happens when we stop performing the shape and begin paying attention to the experience inside it?
What happens when we stay long enough to notice sensation without immediately reacting to it? When we learn the difference between useful stress and too much? When the teacher stops trying to make every body look the same?
That is where Yin becomes much more than “deep stretching.”
Form follows function
One of the central ideas in our Yin training is simple: a pose does not need to look a particular way to be doing its job.
Human skeletons are different. Hip sockets are different. Femurs are different. Spines are different. Range of motion is different.
So instead of asking students to match an external picture of a pose, we teach trainees to understand what a posture is intended to do and then help each student find an appropriate version for their own body.
We call that working within the Goldilocks zone: not too much, not too little, but enough sensation and stress to create the intended experience without forcing the body somewhere it does not need to go.
In the training, we study:
- Functional anatomy, fascia and connective tissue
- Skeletal variation and individual range of motion
- The spine, hips, psoas and knees
- The principles and history of Yin Yoga
- Samkhya, the Yoga Sutras and Taoism
- Prana, Qi and where these traditions meet
- Chakras, vayus, granthis and the subtle body
- Mindfulness and the mindful body
- Sequencing 60- and 90-minute Yin classes
- Theming, voice, props and counterposes
- Vin to Yin, Yin to Vin and Yinyasa formats
- Teaching aging, hypermobile and larger bodies
- Working intelligently with athletes and dense connective tissue
- Trauma-informed approaches to stillness
Stillness is a teaching skill
A good Yin teacher is not simply someone who knows which pose comes next.
There is an art to holding a quiet room.
When do you speak? When do you stop speaking? How much information is useful? How do you offer students choices without constantly interrupting their experience? How do you create a class that has an energetic and emotional arc rather than simply stringing together long-held poses?
And perhaps most importantly: how do you create an environment in which students retain agency over their own bodies?
Stillness does not feel the same to everyone. We teach choice. We normalize changing a position, adding props, reducing sensation and even coming out of a pose. The goal is not endurance for endurance’s sake.
We want teachers who can read a room, teach real bodies and understand that a student’s internal experience matters far more than whether the pose looks impressive from across the studio.
This isn’t a three-day-and-you’re-done certification
Our October training begins before you arrive at the studio and continues after the weekend ends.
You will complete introductory reading and reflection before training. Then we spend Friday evening, Saturday and Sunday together at Balanced Planet Yoga studying anatomy, philosophy, sequencing, energetics, props, theming and the actual craft of teaching.
After the weekend, the learning continues through home practices, observation of Yin classes, a live online group practicum, a final exam and the development of your own fully themed and sequenced class.
Trainees seeking the full teaching certificate will ultimately teach a 60-minute Yin class on the BPY schedule with a trainer present and receive feedback afterward.
Because teaching is the part that turns information into skill.
You don’t have to be a yoga teacher to join us
This training is designed for certified yoga teachers who want to add Yin to their teaching toolbox, but it is also open to dedicated students who simply want to understand their own practice on a deeper level.
You do not need to arrive as a Yin expert. A regular yoga practice is helpful. Curiosity is even more important.
If you’re already teaching, you’ll leave with an entirely new way of looking at bodies, sequencing and stillness.
If you’re here for yourself, you’ll likely never experience a long hold in quite the same way again.
Meet your trainers
This year’s training is led by Cheryl Van Sciver, E-RYT 500, Jenna Kelly, E-RYT 500, and Robert “Bob” Healey.
Cheryl brings the philosophy, subtle-body work and the deeper question of how we hold space as teachers. Jenna leads the anatomy thread, human variation, sequencing and Yin fusion formats. Bob, who has trained with Bernie Clark, brings the history, foundational principles of Yin, fascia, prop work and the relationship between Yin, Yang and restorative practices.
The result is a training that looks at Yin from more than one angle — body, philosophy, energy and teaching craft.
