Why Everyone Should be doing the Kirtan Kriya

Kirtan Kriya is a form of meditation practiced for centuries, particularly in the Sikh tradition. It involves repeating a mantra while performing specific hand movements. In recent years, Kirtan Kriya has gained attention for its potential benefits in slowing down the progression of Alzheimer’s disease.

Alzheimer’s disease is a neurodegenerative disorder that affects millions of people worldwide. Current treatments for Alzheimer’s disease only provide temporary relief of symptoms, and there is no known cure. However, studies have shown that Kirtan Kriya can help improve cognitive function, reduce stress, and improve overall brain health in Alzheimer’s patients.

The practice of Kirtan Kriya involves repeating the mantra “Sa Ta Na Ma” while using specific finger movements. The mantra is a combination of four sounds that represent birth, life, death, and rebirth. The finger movements involve touching the thumb to each of the four fingers in a specific pattern while reciting the mantra.

Studies have shown that regular Kirtan Kriya practice can increase cerebral blood flow, improve memory function, and reduce stress levels. In a 2010 study published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease, researchers found that practicing for 12 minutes a day for eight weeks improved cognitive function and memory in adults with subjective cognitive decline.

Another study published in the in 2016 found that Kirtan Kriya practice for 12 minutes a day for 12 weeks improved brain connectivity in adults with mild cognitive impairment. The study also found that Kirtan Kriya practice reduced symptoms of depression and anxiety in study participants.

The benefits of Kirtan Kriya for Alzheimer’s patients are still being researched, but the practice shows promise as a complementary therapy for slowing down the progression of the disease. It is a safe and no-cost practice that can be done in the comfort of one’s own home.
