Teach Me To Handstand by Kate Behrend
If you have practiced with me, then you know that I have a passion for being upside down. Truth is, I’ve only been on this inverted journey for 2 years.
Despite my years of gymnastics, dance and yoga, I could never stick a handstand. Day after day I would try and fail. Jump up and fall down. Kick higher and crash harder. I was so determined to get it right that I didn’t care how it looked or what it did to my body. Over time, I developed the perception that it just wasn’t something my body could do. Even though I kept trying, I was ultimately fighting a mental limitation I had set for myself.
And then one day, it happened. I held a handstand for a nanosecond and I was sold. I felt like a superhero. Like all things I had put limitations on in my life (on and off the mat) were lifted. It truly felt like anything could be possible. And since then, I’ve never looked back. Handstands might be fun and challenging, but they’re so much more. They are physical reminders of our incredible strength and of our perseverance. When I find myself frustrated in the studio or in life, I often reflect back on that life-changing nanosecond and remember that the work I put in is worth the wait. Handstands mean I can literally invert myself, lift myself, and carry myself through life’s challenges, all while staying grounded to the earth.
We’re so much more powerful than we give ourselves credit for. Handstands helped me truly feel that for the first time and I want nothing more than to share this sense of empowerment with others — and all it takes is your first nanosecond. Let’s get yours!
