  • Getting More From Your Yoga Practice

    September 24, 2015 /

Sometimes the best answer is rolling out your mat. I started my Yoga practice about 7 years ago, and I have practiced on and off since then. To be honest, when I first began practicing, I did it mostly for the physical aspect and did not have an instant love affair with my initial class.  I actually was not into Yoga that much at all.  It wasn’t until I was living in NYC and found a solid class with a teacher who I loved that I started to consistently show up, regardless of how my day unfolded or how tired I was, and I began to truly reap the benefits.…

    September 23, 2015 /

BPY is hosting an Aromatherapy Workshop on Sunday, September 27th from 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm Aromatherapy is the use of aromatic plant oils, also called essential oils, to improve mental, spiritual, and physical wellbeing. Aromatherapy combined with yoga can be a powerful way to bring clarity, focus, energy, and stress-relief into our daily life. Aromatherapy, also known as Essential Oil therapy, can be defined as the art and science of using naturally extracted aromatic essences from plants to balance, harmonize and promote the health of body, mind and spirit.  The goal of this practice is to bring together physical, psychological and spiritual processes to enhance an individual’s natural healing process. The National…

  • What’s your story?

    September 21, 2015 /

What’s your story? You know, the one you keep carrying around with you that informs all your decisions. The one that may be holding you back. The story that says, “I’m not good enough”. The story that says “I’m too old”. “No one ever likes me.” “I’ll never find the right relationship”. The story that “it’s not my fault”. How are those stories working for you?   In Budokon, we talk a lot about our stories.  We are not all physical practice – we are a life science; a living art-form.  We are committed to doing the really hard work of looking at our stuff.  More so, we are committed…

  • Our Journey Through the Yamas

    August 27, 2015 /

THE YAMAS Ahimsa – ‘Non-Violence’ Satya – ‘Truthfulness’ Asteya – ‘Non-Stealing’ Brahmacharya –  ‘Right use of energy’ Aparigraha – ‘Non-Hoarding’   The last five days we have been exploring the Yamas as part of our Balanced Planet Yoga Instagram challenge – #BPYMindBodyChallenge.   We have been able to just provide a drop in the bucket of what understanding and making these precepts a part of your daily living can do.  The Yamas and their counterpart the Niyamas are a framework for living. You may have noticed how these first five Yamas are so interrelated.  One of the questions that I have explored involves Ahimsa and Satya or non-violence and truth.…

    August 17, 2015 /

Yoga Challenge! Starting August 21st BPY’s #BPYMindBodyChallenge! This challenge is all about creating a healthy lifestyle on and off the mat.  Each day we will focus on one of the code of ethics that yogis follow – the Yamas and Niyamas.  These are the first two limbs of the eight limb path of yoga.  Each day, beginning on the 21st, we will post a pose, an explanation/application of how that Yama or Niyama may apply to you, and a food tip or a recipe to go along with that challenge.  So, here is what you need to do if you want to participate: 1.  Repost the challenge post to your Instagram…

  • Yoga: Alignment over Depth

    July 28, 2015 /

If you have attended yoga class at BPY, no doubt you have heard your yoga teacher calling out alignment cues as you move through your practice.  These practice cues include “keep your knee over your ankle,” during our low lunges or “roll your shoulders away from your ears” during up dog and are important reminders for keeping the body safe. Listening for and trying to incorporate these alignments during a slower paced class is much more easily done than during a faster-paced Vinyasa flow or Budokon class, which could cause some of students to overlook alignment and this can contribute to habits that over time can lead to injury. I am sure…

  • Yoga Lingo – Sanskrit Tips Part II

    July 22, 2015 /

Hello BPY Yogis!  Next up on our journey through yoga lingo, I would like to introduce some of the Sanskrit basics when learning yoga posture names.   To facilitate understanding the names of poses in yoga, you may find it to be most helpful to gain an understanding of what the root words are that forms the construct of each Sanskrit word or phrase. The names can be broken down into similar categories and then observed how they can be combined. When we see the separate names that combine to create a pose, the logic of how they are formed easily leads to the understanding of other combinations/pose names, for many…

Have you heard your yoga teacher say something that you were pretty sure was not English?  At the time you are desperately trying to stand on one leg and it just doesn’t seem the time to raise your hand and ask.  In fact, you are sure you may be the only person that didn’t understand, and you certainly don’t want to call attention to that or the fact that you actually cannot stand on one leg.  You get to the end of class and you know you wanted to ask your teacher something…what was it, what was it???? You are not alone….with the struggle to learn yoga’s terminology, balancing on…
